KA Teachers Share their Stories, to Best Support Learning (Mr. Renfro)

The Fundamentals

Motivation. It’s important to motivate students, by love, and that looks differently depending on the student. I want to reinforce to students that you belong. It helps reinforce positivity. Relationships are very important.

The brain learns best when it’s not stressed.

Essential Student Success Habits...
I use a notebook to reinforce notetaking and scientific writing.

It they lose their notebook, they have to re-write all of the pages. The notebook serve as the centerpiece, for their record of learning.

Connecting with Families...
I call families the very first week of school and introduce myself. This helps get the school year off to a very positive start, and sets the foundation for the rest of the year. I just want to ask what works best, for each kid.

Favorite Topics...
I like the space unit, learning about our place in the universe. These topics are cutting edge and relevant.

Favorite Type of Classroom Activities...
It’s fun to give students challenges where more than one answer is possible, and putting students in groups with their peers. I like to change groups up, and allow students to develop more than just academic skills. With Science, it’s great to stay hands-on. This helps reinforce scientific vocabulary.

Advice for Teachers...
Keep the main thing the main thing. There will come a time where you know your students better than anyone. Make the most of this opportunity and stand up for the best ways to maximize student learning. Being here for the kids is what we are here for.
