KA Teachers Share their Stories, to Best Support Learning (Mrs. James)

The Fundamentals

Real world application is key. Students need to be able to take what they are learning home, and relate the information to their own experience. Bell ringers and hands on activities are important, along with exit tickets.

This helps students know where they are, and what they need to work on further. My exit tickets are also usually taken from old state tests.

Essential Student Success Habits...
A positive attitude is important. You need to have a positive mindset, and remain engaged with the lab activities.
You must study every day. You have to be able to apply the content. My tests are not based on memorization.

Connecting with Families...
All of my projects include outside classroom connections. This helps create real home connections, including when we study genetics and nutrition. For example, part of one of my projects includes families cooking a meal together.

Favorite Topics...
Cells, and this relates to breast cancer. I also like DNA.

Favorite Type of Classroom Activities...
I like review games. It helps make everyone feel involved, and give students confidence before they take an exam.

Advice for Teachers...
I think it’s important to always have fun. If students have questions this means they really are interested, take this opportunity to keep getting students even more engaged in learning.
