KA Teachers Share their Stories, to Best Support Learning (Ms. Miller)

The Fundamentals

I always try to incorporate some type of reading activity, and some type of writing activity. I also incorporate a standard process of review. Combining both the reading and writing standards creates that balance.

If you tell me something you must show evidence, from the material.

Essential Student Success Habits...
Get used to re-editing. If you push kids they will rise to the occasion.

Connecting with Families...
Positive feedback can go a long way, developing stronger relationships with families. I saw a drastic change with just a simple positive message.

Favorite Topics...
Argumentative writing. We’re holding a mock trial in the classroom. Students will put the characters from the book on trial, providing evidence from the reading.

Favorite Type of Classroom Activities...

I like the Summit Learning platform because it allows kids to show their skills through different ways. It helps me see where students need to grow.  With the grading scale, everything is based on the rubric. There may be up to six different things, but it combines into one grade.

Advice for Teachers...
Balancing time is key. Use your planning wisely, and make sure there is an end goal.

I think building relationships with my students was the most positive thing I did, last year. You see the tangible reward, through the relationships you build.
